Welcome to this month's Featured Links section. You can catch up on previous Featured Links here:
Featured links this month will all appeal to students, and the first two, The Narrow Gate and Windows into the World of Jesus are designed with their needs specially in mind. The Narrow Gate by Richard Martin is a remarkable, growing collection of introductory New Testament materials on a wide variety of topics. Windows into the World of Jesus by Daniel Schrock is a fine series of Studies in Mark's Gospel. The third featured link is to some excellent new free software called Bible Database by Brent Maurer. It provides a highly flexible programme for viewing and using more than 50 Bibles in over 30 languages.
The Narrow Gate
The New Testament and Early Christianity at CBHS, by Richard Martin at the Christian Brothers High School, Memphis, TN, USA: a superb, growing collection of materials for students, "designed as a sort of internet textbook". There is a wealth of useful material here including outlines to key issues in Biblical studies arranged by topic, an extended glossary of important terms, links to other sites and clear charts on material like the Infancy Narratives and the Passion Narratives. Perhaps the most enjoyable and useful elements in the site are the crosswords and quizzes that accompany each topic. Strongly recommended.
Windows Into the World of Jesus: Studies in Mark's Gospel
By Daniel P. Schrock: fine, illustrated introduction to the cultural world of Jesus, primarily using the gospel of Mark. You can work systematically through a series of thirteen topics, beginning with "Jesus and John the Baptist" and concluding with "Jesus and Resurrection". Includes studies on "Jesus and Kinship", "Jesus and Honor" and "Jesus and Purity". Each study begins with the Biblical text and proceeds with both the author's own commentary and some well chosen links to related material on the web. This site was originally created for an adult Christian
education class and is ideal for students.
Bible Database
By Brent Maurer: this is a fine new piece of free software. There are more than 50 Bibles in over 30 languages available to use in the programme (including KJV, RSV, ASV; Greek N-A26 and more). Like the On-line Bible, you download the programme and then choose which Bibles and which extra features (Bible Dictionaries, devotional commentaries etc.) you would like to download. Unlike the On-line Bible, this programme has a "multi bible viewer" in which you can instantly compare the different translations of a given passage in one window. You can also manipulate the text -- change the font, cut and paste, etc. One of the strengths of the web site connected with the programme is that it is very well documented, and detailed easy-to-follow instructions are provided on how to work with the software. A very useful new programme.
