They have put a lot of time and effort into deciding which variants to place in their text and want to monetise that to further their efforts (if nothing else). Ultimately, it means that they violate their own goal which is to achieve the "autographs," which if successful would mean that they can no longer claim copyright. However, I think it doubtful that anyone would recognise the autographs even if they bit them in the foot so the GBS will always be able to make more money off selling the NA and UBS volumes. If someone wants to go to all the work of creating a new GNT and put it in the public domain they are free to do so but I doubt it would be widely adopted because it would not be NA27.
