For Greek news please check nea which is one of the leading sites with news in Greece. Of course it's written in Greek but you can translate the main news using Google translate.

A German Bible Society statement on the copyright situation for the Greek New Testament can be found at http://www.dbg.de/en/meta/service/rechte.html

I'm sure that the GBS is claiming that this is their own creative work. They have put a lot of time and effort into deciding which variants to place in their text and want to monetise that to further their efforts (if nothing else). Ultimately, it means that they violate their own goal which is to achieve the "autographs," which if successful would mean that they can no longer claim copyright. However, I think it doubtful that anyone would recognise the autographs even if they bit them in the foot so the GBS will always be able to make more money off selling the NA and UBS volumes. If someone wants to go to all the work of creating a new GNT and put it in the public domain they are free to do so but I doubt it would be widely adopted because it would not be NA27. And that fact is how the GBS can claim copyright.

Why is everyone taking this lying down? All I can see online is people talking of surrender. The German Bible Society contributed nothing to this effort; they merely want to seize control.

I don't see how MorphGNT can possibly be copyright, since its contents are either the work of CCAT or Jim Tauber, or else of Matthew, Mark etc, dead for two millennia. Unless, that is, the German Bible Society does not claim that the text is indeed authorial, but is their own "creative work". If so, some kind of action for passing off inferior goods might be possible.

Has anyone sought a legal opinion in the US on this absurd claim? Is there any case law, whatever, in favour of the Boche?

What is needed, surely, is for someone to take this to a US court and obtain an order voiding the claim of copyright. I think this is a try-on.

Well, that tells me just one thing: the German Bible Society is more of a business than a ministry. Okay, two things: it also tells me to download all the online GNT resources I can find before others also feel like owners of the text.

Perhaps I can fill in a small part of the void left by Zhubert's departure. You are welcome to post links to the Greek Uncial Archetype of Mark, which I welcome visitors to copy, use, and distribute. It is currently available at

Some people are working on "taking up the mantle" of Zhubert: http://openscriptures.org/

Included is a prototype manuscript comparator, which takes freely-licensed texts (e.g. WH v. TR) and puts them in parallel or inline comparison. It's sort of a poor-man's eclectic edition. There is also an active mailing list associated with the project.
