Archaeology

There are many fine resources on the internet for the study of Bible related archaeology. This directory does not attempt to be exhaustive but provides an annotated guide to the best sites available, particularly the meta-sites and the stronger pages focusing on famous places. Note that Dead Sea Scrolls links are listed not here but on the Judaica page.

General Resources

Biblical Archaeology Society
Homepage for the Biblical Archaeology Society with extensive news and useful excerpts from Biblical Archaeology Review, Bible Review and Archaeological Odyssey.

Biblical Archaeologist
Information and some excerpts from an important journal.

From Jesus to Christ: Biblical Archaeology
A useful section of the excellent PBS site devoted to Jesus and Christian origins. Click on a handful of locations on the map to view introductory information on them.

Also included are two useful essays: Marianne Bonz, Recovering the Material World of the Early Christians & James Charlesworth, Jesus and Jehohanan: An Archaeological Note on Crucifixion.

Second Temple Synagogues
Donald Binder's first class resource based on his doctoral dissertation and featuring information and illustrations on Synagogues in the Second Temple Period. For further research on archaeology related to the New Testament, see Binder's excellent directory of Archaeological Resources.

World Wide Web Sites Relating to the Ancient Mediterranean (Back on the web! New URL)
K.C. Hanson provides here a good selection of links, many focusing on archaeology in Palestine and the wider ancient Mediterranean. A useful jumping-off point.

The Bible and Interpretation
Editors: V. Cox and M. Elliott: well-designed site with lots of links to the latest internet material on the Bible, and some original articles, with a special focus on Archaeology. The great value of this site is that it is updated so regularly.

ABZU: Archaeological Sites
For further information on archaeological sites in the near east, this index from the Oriental Society at the University of Chicago, U.S.A provides an extensive, useful listing.

Ecole Biblique et Archéologique Française
This homepage for the Ecole Biblique et Archéologique Française in Jerusalem includes a section devoted to Archaeology at the Ecole.

Bible Places.com
Photographs and descriptions of sites in Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey and Greece with an emphasis on biblical archaeology, geography and history. Although a commercial site, there is much here available for all users, including descriptions, links and especially many fine photographs.
